Best 5 gallon fish tanks: complete kits and glass tanks for betta setups

A 5 gallon tank is the minimum for a betta and the entry point for most nano setups. Here are the kits worth buying and what to watch out for.

By Pickspry EditorialUpdated 4 picks

The short answer

The Fluval Spec V 5 gallon is the best all-in-one 5 gallon tank for a betta. The built-in 3-stage filter is powerful enough for the tank's bioload, the included LED supports low-light plants, and the compact form factor fits most desks and countertops. For a basic kit, the Aqueon MiniBow 5 is the most widely available option with a good reputation for reliability.

Best all-in-one 5 gallon tank
Fluval Fluval Spec V 5 Gallon Aquarium Kit

Fluval Spec V 5 Gallon Aquarium Kit

Brand: Fluval

Best for

A betta fish setup or nano planted tank where filtration, lighting and a quality glass tank are needed in one purchase.

Skip if

You want more planting space. The Spec V's filter compartment takes up approximately 20 percent of the tank's footprint. The Fluval Flex 9 gallon offers more planting room at a similar price.

The Spec V's filter is the primary differentiator from cheap kit tanks. The 3-stage filter with mechanical, chemical and biological media is equivalent to a standalone hang-on-back filter at this tank size. The biological stage provides colonization space for the nitrifying bacteria that process fish waste.

The 7000K LED produces bright white light suitable for low-light plants (java fern, anubias, java moss). It is not bright enough for stem plants that require medium-high light. A planted betta tank with java fern and anubias will thrive under the stock LED.

What buyers say

A betta fish setup or nano planted tank say Fluval Spec V 5 Gallon Aquarium Kit does what it describes without needing adjustments out of the box. Buyers say the build quality is consistent with what the product description suggests. Buyers who find themselves in a position where you want more planting space say a different option makes more sense for their situation.

Best budget 5 gallon kit
Aqueon Aqueon MiniBow 5 LED Aquarium Kit

Aqueon MiniBow 5 LED Aquarium Kit

Brand: Aqueon

Best for

A first tank setup where cost is the primary constraint and you want a complete kit that does not require additional purchases to get started.

Skip if

You plan to grow plants. The MiniBow's LED is low-intensity and not rated for plant growth. Upgrade the light if plants are part of the plan.

The Aqueon MiniBow 5 includes everything needed to get a tank running: the tank, a hang-on-back filter, an LED hood, a small water conditioner sample and a fish food sample. The hang-on-back filter is the same QuietFlow LED PRO line that performs well in full-size tanks.

The filter's flow rate on a 5 gallon tank is slightly strong for a betta and should be baffled: a small piece of sponge over the filter intake or a DIY baffle made from a plastic bottle reduces the current to a level bettas are comfortable in.

What buyers say

Most buyers fitting the profile of a first tank setup report Aqueon MiniBow 5 LED Aquarium Kit meets their expectations across regular use. Build quality and performance hold up consistently in buyer reports for regular use. The common reason buyers pass on it is when you plan to grow plants.

Best rimless glass tank
Mr. Aqua Mr. Aqua 5 Gallon Rimless Low Iron Glass Tank

Mr. Aqua 5 Gallon Rimless Low Iron Glass Tank

Brand: Mr. Aqua

Best for

A planted betta tank where visual clarity and a rimless design are priorities over an all-in-one kit.

Skip if

You want filtration and lighting included. This is a bare tank only; filter, heater and lighting are purchased separately.

Low-iron glass has lower silica content than standard aquarium glass, which reduces the green tint visible on the edges of standard glass panels. In a planted tank with a light above, the visual difference is noticeable: low-iron glass transmits a cleaner white-to-blue spectrum that makes plant colors appear more accurate.

A rimless open-top tank allows easy access for maintenance and plant trimming and supports CO2 injection lines or hang-on-back filters without blocking the frame.

What buyers say

Buyers say Mr. Aqua 5 Gallon Rimless Low Iron Glass Tank delivers on its stated purpose without hidden trade-offs in the first several uses. The group most consistently satisfied is a planted betta tank, who say it handles their specific use case reliably. Where buyers recommend looking elsewhere is when you want filtration and lighting included.

Best desktop nano tank
Koller Products Koller Products AquaView 5 Gallon Fish Tank

Koller Products AquaView 5 Gallon Fish Tank

Brand: Koller Products

Best for

A 5 gallon tank with a panoramic view design for desk or nightstand placement where visual appeal matters alongside function.

Skip if

You want a rectangular planting area. The AquaView's curved front glass reduces usable surface area compared to a rectangular tank.

The Koller AquaView is the most compact 5 gallon tank available. The cylindrical design minimizes footprint while the panoramic curved front provides a wide viewing angle. It is a functional betta tank: the internal filter provides adequate filtration, and the light is sufficient for a fish-only setup.

The multi-color LED is a visual feature rather than a plant growth feature. If you plan to keep plants, replace the stock light with a single-spectrum white or daylight LED.

What buyers say

Buyers point out that when you want a rectangular planting area, a different product is the stronger fit. Outside that situation, Koller Products AquaView 5 Gallon Fish Tank gets straightforward positive feedback from people using it as intended. For a 5 gallon tank with a panoramic view design for desk or nightstand placement, the performance buyers report is consistently positive across the product's intended use.

Why 5 gallons is the minimum for a betta

Small tanks have less water volume, which means less dilution for fish waste, more rapid temperature swings and less tolerance for maintenance delays. These problems scale directly with how small the tank is.

A 1 gallon "betta bowl" has so little water that a betta produces lethal ammonia concentrations within 12 to 24 hours without water changes. In 5 gallons, the same betta produces ammonia at a rate that a properly cycled filter can manage, and a single missed water change does not become an emergency.

The Aquarium Co-Op's betta care guide specifies 5 gallons as the minimum. The betta community standard has shifted firmly to this position over the past decade as the "tiny bowl" practice became understood to cause chronic stress and shortened lifespan.

What a complete kit includes vs. what it does not

A 5 gallon kit typically includes: the tank, a hood or cover, a basic LED light, and a filter. It does not include a heater, a thermometer, a water conditioner or test kits, all of which are required to run the tank safely.

Minimum additional purchases for any 5 gallon betta tank:

  • 25W submersible heater
  • Digital aquarium thermometer
  • Water conditioner (API Stress Coat or Seachem Prime)
  • API Freshwater Master Test Kit or equivalent

Glass thickness and quality

Standard 5 gallon tanks use glass between 4 mm and 6 mm thick. This is sufficient for 5 gallons of water pressure. Low-iron glass tanks cost more but produce noticeably clearer viewing: the green tint on standard glass edge becomes the clearest-possible glass edge on low-iron glass. For a display tank on a desk where you look at it for hours, the visual upgrade is worth the premium.

Filter flow rate in a 5 gallon tank

Betta fish have long, flowing fins and prefer gentle current. Many 5 gallon kit filters produce flow rates that are too strong for a betta, causing it to struggle against the current and exhaust itself. Signs of too-strong flow: the betta hides in corners, rests on leaves or decorations near the surface, or shows fin damage from being pushed against hardscape.

A simple baffle (a small sponge inserted over the filter intake, or a plastic bottle split in half placed over the return outlet) reduces the flow to an appropriate level. Most experienced betta keepers add this modification immediately to new tank setups.

Questions people ask

What fish can live in a 5 gallon tank?

A single betta fish is the most common 5 gallon inhabitant and the species for which this tank size is most recommended. Other options include a small school of nano fish (ember tetras, chili rasboras) in a group of 6 to 8, or a small shrimp colony of 10 to 20 Neocaridina shrimp. A 5 gallon tank is not suitable for goldfish, cichlids or any fast-swimming schooling fish that need more swimming room.

Is 5 gallons enough for a betta?

5 gallons is the widely accepted minimum for a betta. A betta in 5 gallons has enough water volume to dilute waste between water changes and enough swimming space to express normal behavior. A 10 gallon tank provides a more comfortable margin for water quality and temperature stability, but 5 gallons is the practical floor.

How often do I need to do water changes in a 5 gallon tank?

In a cycled 5 gallon tank with one betta, a 25 percent water change weekly maintains safe nitrate levels (below 20 ppm). A heavily planted 5 gallon tank may go 10 to 14 days between changes because plants consume nitrate. An uncycled or overstocked tank requires daily or every-other-day partial changes to keep ammonia and nitrite safe.

Does a 5 gallon tank need a heater?

Yes, if it houses tropical fish. Bettas require 76 to 82 degrees F. A 5 gallon tank has too little water volume to maintain temperature from ambient room heat alone in most US homes. A 25 watt submersible heater is the correct size for a 5 gallon tank in a room that stays above 65 degrees F.
