Coffee Grinders

Burr and blade coffee grinders for consistent grind size from espresso to French press.

Grinder mechanism determines grind consistency, which is the most important variable in coffee quality after bean freshness. A blade grinder chops beans randomly, producing a mix of fine powder and coarse chunks in the same batch; the uneven particle size causes simultaneous under-extraction (from the coarse chunks) and over-extraction (from the fine powder). A burr grinder crushes beans between two abrasive surfaces separated by a fixed gap, producing a consistent particle size for the target brew method. A flat burr grinder produces a more consistent grind than a conical burr grinder at the same price point, but conical burr grinders are quieter. This section covers coffee grinders by mechanism (blade versus burr), grind size range, hopper capacity and noise level.
