Questions people ask

How does an electric citrus juicer work?

An electric citrus juicer uses a motorized reamer (a ribbed cone) that spins when activated. To use: cut the citrus in half horizontally. Press the cut side of the citrus half down onto the spinning reamer. The spinning reamer cone presses and rotates against the flesh of the fruit, releasing juice through the reamer holes or slots into a pitcher or jar below. The fruit rind stays on top while juice falls through the strainer. Auto-press models (Black+Decker) turn the reamer on when the fruit is pressed down and off when it is lifted, making operation one-step. Some models (Cuisinart CJE-1000) use bi-directional reaming where the reamer spins both left and right during juicing to extract more from each piece of fruit.

Can an electric citrus juicer handle grapefruit?

Most electric citrus juicers handle grapefruit with a standard reamer. Grapefruit is larger in diameter than an orange, so the reamer cone must be wide enough to press across most of the grapefruit half. Most standard electric citrus reamers (Black+Decker, Cuisinart) handle medium to large grapefruit halves. For very large grapefruit, a wider reamer like the Breville 800CPXL self-adjusting cone is better suited. To juice grapefruit in a standard electric juicer: cut the grapefruit in half across the segments (horizontally), press firmly down onto the reamer and rotate slightly as you press to encourage juice extraction from the outer segments. A 1-liter jar (Cuisinart) holds more grapefruit juice per batch than a 32-oz pitcher.

How much juice does an orange produce?

One medium navel orange (approximately 6 oz whole weight) produces approximately 4 to 5 tablespoons (60 to 75 ml) of juice. One large navel orange produces approximately 5 to 6 tablespoons (75 to 90 ml). For a standard 8-oz glass of fresh orange juice, you need 2 to 3 large or 3 to 4 medium oranges. For a 32-oz pitcher of juice, plan for 8 to 12 oranges depending on size and how ripe the fruit is. Summer oranges at peak ripeness yield more juice than winter fruit or unripe fruit. Juice yield also depends on juicer method: a bi-directional reamer (Cuisinart CJE-1000) extracts approximately 10 to 15 percent more juice than a single-direction reamer from the same fruit.
