Best hair clippers for men: top picks on Amazon

Hair clippers cut and fade head hair at home. Blade gap, motor type (rotary vs magnetic vs pivot), whether the unit is corded or cordless, guard comb range, self-sharpening blades and whether the taper lever allows mid-guard fading separate professional from consumer models.

By Pickspry EditorialUpdated 4 picks

The short answer

The Wahl Magic Clip at $65 is the best hair clippers for most men cutting hair at home: the cordless design handles a full haircut on a single charge, the adjustable taper lever enables blending between guard lengths for fades and the blades are the same used in professional barber shops.

Best cordless clippers for home use
Wahl Wahl Magic Clip Cordless Hair Clippers

Wahl Magic Clip Cordless Hair Clippers

Brand: Wahl

Best for

Men cutting their own hair or cutting family members' hair at home, where the Wahl Magic Clip's adjustable taper lever enables fade blending and the cordless design provides freedom of movement during a full haircut.

Skip if

Heavy all-day professional barber use. The Wahl Magic Clip is designed for home and professional use but may run warm after extended continuous cutting sessions. For barbers running 8-hour days, the corded Andis Master handles sustained heat load better.

The Wahl Magic Clip uses the same blade and motor design found in Wahl's professional barber line. The adjustable taper lever moves the cutting blade to blend between guard comb lengths without changing the guard, which is how barbers create fades without visible lines.

The 90-minute lithium battery handles a full haircut with remaining charge for touch-ups. Eight numbered guide combs from 1/8 inch to 1 inch cover all standard lengths.

At $65, the Wahl Magic Clip is the professional-grade cordless clipper for home haircuts and fades.

Best professional corded clippers
Andis Andis Master Adjustable Blade Clipper

Andis Master Adjustable Blade Clipper

Brand: Andis

Best for

Barbers and professional stylists who need corded clippers for all-day use without battery management, where the Andis Master's rotary motor and adjustable blade run continuously without the performance drop that occurs as cordless batteries deplete.

Skip if

Cordless mobility is required. The Andis Master is corded, which limits range of movement during haircuts. For home haircuts where cord management is inconvenient, the cordless Wahl Magic Clip provides similar cutting performance without the cord.

The Andis Master uses a high-speed magnetic motor that maintains constant speed under load without the torque drop of pivot motors when cutting through dense or wet hair. The adjustable blade lever moves between 00000 (very close) and 1 (longer) for fading without guard changes.

The all-chrome housing handles the heat of extended professional use. The 8-foot cord allows movement around a client without pulling.

At $100, the Andis Master is the professional barber clipper for all-day corded use.

Best mid-range clippers
Oster Oster Fast Feed Adjustable Pivot Motor Clipper

Oster Fast Feed Adjustable Pivot Motor Clipper

Brand: Oster

Best for

Barbers and home users who want a lightweight corded clipper with a quiet pivot motor, where the Oster Fast Feed's reduced weight reduces hand fatigue during longer cuts compared to heavier professional clippers.

Skip if

Cordless is the preference. The Oster Fast Feed is corded only. For home use where a cord is inconvenient, the Wahl Magic Clip at similar price provides cordless mobility with comparable cutting performance.

The Oster Fast Feed uses an adjustable pivot motor that runs quieter than high-speed magnetic motors, reducing noise discomfort during home haircuts. The lightweight 9.4-oz housing reduces hand fatigue on longer haircuts.

The 4-position adjustable blade covers 000 through 1 for basic fading. Four guide combs cover 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch for standard home haircut lengths.

At $80, the Oster Fast Feed is the lightweight quiet corded clipper between consumer and professional grades.

Best budget home clippers
Remington Remington HC4250 Shortcut Pro Hair Clipper

Remington HC4250 Shortcut Pro Hair Clipper

Brand: Remington

Best for

Men who cut their own hair solo and need a curved blade designed for rear-head access, where the Remington Shortcut Pro's curved blade reaches the back of the head more easily than straight-blade clippers when cutting alone.

Skip if

Precise fades or detailed blending are required. The Remington HC4250 at $30 is designed for simple all-one-length self-cuts. It does not have a taper lever for fading. For men who want to create fades or blend between lengths, the Wahl Magic Clip at $65 provides the taper lever required for that technique.

The Remington HC4250 uses a curved blade shape that follows the curvature of the head when cutting from behind, a geometry that makes solo self-cuts more manageable than straight blades that require awkward wrist angles to reach the rear hairline.

Nine guide combs cover the full range of standard haircut lengths. The lithium battery provides 45 minutes of use per charge.

At $30, the Remington HC4250 is the budget self-cut clipper designed for one-person home haircuts.

Questions people ask

How do I fade hair with clippers at home?

A fade blends from a short length near the neck to a longer length higher on the head without a visible line between lengths. Start with the highest guard and cut the top of the head. Move to the next shorter guard and cut up to the blending zone. Use the taper lever (the side lever on clippers like the Wahl Magic Clip) to blend at each guard transition: with the guard on the shorter setting, move the lever toward the closed position and brush upward through the blending zone with a flicking motion. The taper lever creates a mid-point between the two guard lengths. A good mirror or a second person checking the back prevents uneven blending that is not visible from the front.

How often should hair clippers be oiled?

Hair clippers should be oiled before every use, or at minimum every 3 to 5 uses, with two drops of clipper oil on the front of the blade where the upper blade rides over the lower blade. Oil prevents the blade-on-blade friction that dulls both blades prematurely and causes the motor to run hotter under cutting resistance. Most clippers include a small bottle of clipper oil with purchase. After oiling, run the clipper for 10 seconds before the first cut to distribute the oil evenly. Blades that click or pull hair rather than cutting cleanly need oiling or replacement.

What is the difference between clipper guard sizes?

Clipper guard numbers correspond to 1/8-inch increments in most US-made clipper sets. A 1 guard leaves 1/8 inch of hair, a 2 guard leaves 2/8 inch (1/4 inch), a 3 guard leaves 3/8 inch and so on up to 8 guards leaving 1 inch. The 0 guard (bare blade) and 00 guard (very close) leave very short stubble. Professional barber terminology also uses razor fade, skin fade and 0.5 as descriptions for cuts shorter than a 1 guard. For home use, starting with a higher guard and moving progressively shorter prevents accidentally cutting too close before knowing the exact guard that produces the desired length.
