Best hiking backpack for most day hikes
Osprey Osprey Talon 22 Day Pack

Osprey Talon 22 Day Pack

Brand: Osprey

Best for

Day hikers on trails of 5 to 15 miles who carry water, food, layers and navigation gear and want a ventilated back panel that reduces back sweat, where Osprey Talon 22 uses the AirSpeed back panel that holds the pack body several centimeters away from the back to allow air circulation during active hiking.

Overnight hiking is the use case. The 22-liter volume is sized for day hikes only. For overnight backpacking requiring a sleeping bag, shelter and additional clothing, a 40 to 65-liter pack provides the necessary volume.

Osprey Talon 22 uses the AirSpeed suspension that creates a gap between the pack body and the back panel, allowing air to flow up the back during movement. The padded hip belt transfers weight from the shoulders to the hips for packs loaded over 15 lb.

The integrated rain cover stores in a dedicated rear pocket and pulls out over the pack when rain begins. A separate sleeping bag compartment at the base provides a designated bottom layer for a jacket or packed-down insulation. The two water bottle pockets are stretch mesh accessible while wearing the pack.

At $110, Osprey Talon 22 is the most feature-complete day pack in this guide.

Best ultralight day hiking pack
Deuter Deuter Speed Lite 21 Hiking Pack

Deuter Speed Lite 21 Hiking Pack

Brand: Deuter

Best for

Hikers and trail runners who prioritize low pack weight over features, where Deuter Speed Lite 21 at 13 oz empty is significantly lighter than feature-rich packs like Osprey Talon and allows faster movement on technical trails where a lighter load reduces physical fatigue.

Skip if

Gear organization is important. Deuter Speed Lite uses a minimalist design with fewer compartments and pockets than Osprey Talon 22 or Deuter Trail 22. For hikers who carry a large number of small items that need organized access (first aid kit, navigation, snacks, layers), a more compartmentalized pack is more practical.

Deuter Speed Lite 21 uses a streamlined construction with a thin foam back panel and webbing hip belt that reduces empty weight to 13 oz. The pack is appropriate for loads under 15 lb where hip belt load transfer is not required.

The 21-liter volume fits water, food and a packable rain jacket for a 6 to 8-hour hike. The single main compartment with a hydration sleeve is the primary storage space; a small top pocket provides quick-access storage for navigation and snacks.

At $90, Deuter Speed Lite 21 appeals to hikers who prefer to feel the pack as little as possible during active movement.

03
Best mid-range day hiking pack
REI Co-op REI Co-op Flash 22 Pack

REI Co-op Flash 22 Pack

Brand: REI Co-op

Best for

Hikers who want a mid-range pack with an adjustable torso fit system that accommodates different torso lengths, where REI Flash 22 uses an adjustable back panel that slides to fit torso lengths from 15 to 20 inches without purchasing a different pack size.

Skip if

Ventilated back contact is the priority. REI Flash 22 uses a contact back panel that rests against the back rather than the elevated suspension of Osprey Talon. For hiking in hot conditions where back sweat is a significant comfort issue, Osprey Talon 22's AirSpeed system provides meaningfully better ventilation.

REI Flash 22 uses an adjustable torso suspension that slides along a rail on the back panel to position the shoulder straps correctly for different torso lengths. The padded hip belt includes two zippered pockets for quick access to snacks, a phone or lip balm during hiking without stopping to open the main pack.

The 22-liter main compartment includes a hydration sleeve compatible with most 2-liter reservoir bladders. Two stretch mesh side pockets hold water bottles or trekking pole tips.

At $80, REI Flash 22 is the most affordable padded-suspension day pack in this guide.

Best commuter and day hike crossover pack
Osprey Osprey Daylite Plus 20 Pack

Osprey Daylite Plus 20 Pack

Brand: Osprey

Best for

Hikers who also use their pack for commuting, travel or city use and want a versatile pack that works for day hikes and everyday carry, where Osprey Daylite Plus 20 uses a front slash pocket and multiple compartments that organize a laptop, daily gear and hiking supplies in the same pack without the obvious trail appearance of technical hiking packs.

Skip if

Technical trail performance is the primary use. Osprey Daylite Plus 20 does not include a ventilated back panel or a dedicated rain cover. For serious trail use in wet conditions or hot temperatures, Osprey Talon 22 is the appropriate hiking-optimized choice.

Osprey Daylite Plus 20 uses a padded foam back panel with a laptop sleeve that holds a 15-inch laptop. The front slash pocket provides quick access to small items without opening the main compartment. The multiple internal organizational pockets accommodate the mix of tech accessories and trail gear typical of a commuter-to-trail pack.

The 20-liter volume is slightly smaller than Talon 22 but adequate for a day hike carrying water, layers and food. The plain aesthetic works in both urban and trail contexts.

At $70, Osprey Daylite Plus 20 is the most affordable option in this guide for an Osprey pack with a laptop sleeve.

Questions people ask

What size backpack do I need for a day hike?

A 15 to 25-liter pack is appropriate for most day hikes. A 15-liter pack fits water (2 to 3 liters), one to two snacks, a jacket and a small first aid kit. A 25-liter pack adds a lunch, additional layers, a rain jacket and basic navigation gear. For hikes over 8 hours, a 20 to 30-liter pack provides enough space for a full lunch, multiple snacks and layers for changing mountain weather. For hikes with a group where one person carries shared gear like a group first aid kit, emergency blanket or navigation device, a 25 to 30-liter pack accommodates the extra shared items. Packs over 30 liters are sized for overnight gear; using an oversized pack on a day hike adds weight and causes the pack to shift on the back without the volume filled.

Should a hiking backpack have a hip belt?

A padded hip belt is beneficial for packs loaded over 10 to 15 lb. For lighter day packs under 10 lb, a simple webbing hip belt stabilizes the pack during movement without providing load transfer. For packs over 15 lb, a padded hip belt transfers 60 to 70% of the pack weight from the shoulders to the hips, which reduces shoulder and neck fatigue significantly over a 6 to 8-hour hike. Pack weight is primarily a function of water carried: 3 liters of water weighs 6.6 lb. A day pack with 3 liters of water, lunch and layers easily reaches 15 lb, where a padded hip belt noticeably reduces shoulder fatigue. For trail running or very fast hiking with a light load, a thin or no hip belt reduces swinging interference with leg movement.

How do I fit a hiking backpack properly?

Fitting a hiking backpack requires setting the torso length correctly. Measure torso length from the C7 vertebra (the prominent bone at the base of the neck when the head is dropped forward) to the iliac crest (the top of the hip bones). This measurement determines the correct torso size range for the pack. Position the hip belt so the top of the padded portion sits 1 inch above the iliac crest. Tighten the hip belt first. Pull the shoulder straps until the contour of the straps follows the curve of the shoulders with no gap at the shoulder top. Tighten the load lifter straps (the short straps from the top of the shoulder straps to the top of the pack frame) to a 45-degree angle. Tighten the sternum strap so it sits 1 to 2 inches below the collarbone.
