Best laundry detergent for most households: top picks on Amazon

A laundry detergent cleans clothing through surfactants, enzymes, builders and sometimes optical brighteners. Concentration (loads per ounce), enzyme types (protease, amylase, lipase), HE compatibility, fragrance-free formulation and liquid vs pod vs powder format affect cost-per-load and cleaning effectiveness.

By Pickspry EditorialUpdated 4 picks

The short answer

Tide Original Liquid Detergent at $22 for 96 loads is the best laundry detergent for most households: the multi-enzyme formula (protease, amylase, lipase) addresses protein, starch and grease stains simultaneously, it is HE compatible and non-HE compatible and the 23 cents per load cost is competitive for a detergent with a multi-enzyme formula.

Tide Tide Original Liquid Laundry Detergent 96 Loads

Tide Original Liquid Laundry Detergent 96 Loads

Brand: Tide

Best for

Households looking for a broadly effective detergent that handles the full range of common stains at a mid-range price, where Tide Original uses a multi-enzyme formula that addresses protein, starch, grease and tannin-based stains without requiring separate stain treatment for everyday laundry loads.

Skip if

Fragrance sensitivity or allergies are present in the household. Tide Original contains fragrance compounds. For fragrance-sensitive households, Seventh Generation Free and Clear at $14 uses the same cleaning enzymes without fragrance or dyes. Tide also offers a Free and Gentle variant without fragrance or dyes.

Tide Original uses a multi-enzyme surfactant formula that has consistently ranked among the top-performing detergents in Consumer Reports laundry detergent testing. The protease breaks down protein stains (blood, grass, sweat), amylase targets starch stains (pasta sauce, gravy) and lipase addresses grease and oil stains.

The detergent is compatible with both standard top-loading machines and HE (high-efficiency) front-loading machines. HE machines require low-sudsing detergents; Tide Original produces appropriate suds levels in both machine types.

At $22 for 96 loads, Tide Original costs 23 cents per load, which is mid-range for a multi-enzyme liquid detergent.

Best laundry detergent for tough stains
Persil Persil ProClean Liquid Detergent 100 Loads

Persil ProClean Liquid Detergent 100 Loads

Brand: Persil

Best for

Households with heavily soiled work clothes, athletic gear or outdoor garments where standard detergent performance is insufficient, where Persil ProClean uses a higher surfactant concentration and enzyme formula that ranks at or above Tide in independent stain removal testing.

Skip if

Fragrance-free is required. Persil ProClean contains fragrance. Persil also offers Sensitive Skin fragrance-free variants. The standard ProClean formula is best for households without fragrance sensitivities who want maximum stain removal.

Persil ProClean uses a higher total surfactant concentration than Tide Original, which accounts for its strong performance on heavily soiled garments in standard wash cycles. The enzyme package matches Tide's three-enzyme approach with protease, amylase and lipase.

Persil is the market share leader in European markets where premium detergent performance standards are higher than the US market. The formula is unchanged from the European market version sold under the Henkel brand.

At $18 for 100 loads, Persil ProClean costs 18 cents per load, slightly below Tide Original at 23 cents per load.

Best fragrance-free laundry detergent
Seventh Generation Seventh Generation Free and Clear Liquid Detergent

Seventh Generation Free and Clear Liquid Detergent

Brand: Seventh Generation

Best for

Households with fragrance sensitivities, allergies or infants where fragrance-free formulation is required, where Seventh Generation Free and Clear uses no fragrance or dyes with a plant-derived enzyme formula that provides adequate performance for everyday household laundry.

Skip if

Maximum stain removal performance is needed. Seventh Generation Free and Clear performs below Tide and Persil on heavy stains like set-in grease, blood and heavily soiled work clothes in third-party testing. For sensitive skin with high stain removal needs, Tide Free and Gentle provides fragrance-free formulation with Tide's stronger enzyme package.

Seventh Generation Free and Clear uses a plant-based surfactant system certified by the EPA Safer Choice program. The fragrance-free and dye-free formula minimizes allergen exposure for sensitive skin and infants.

The detergent is HE compatible and biodegrades in municipal wastewater treatment systems. The formula does not contain chlorine bleach, phosphates or optical brighteners.

At $14 for 53 loads, Seventh Generation Free and Clear costs 26 cents per load for the most widely distributed fragrance-free plant-based detergent.

Best budget laundry detergent
Arm and Hammer Arm and Hammer Clean Burst Liquid Detergent

Arm and Hammer Clean Burst Liquid Detergent

Brand: Arm and Hammer

Best for

Budget-conscious households who want an HE-compatible detergent at the lowest cost per load for everyday laundry where stain loads are light to moderate and maximum enzyme performance is not required.

Skip if

Heavily soiled clothing or significant stain removal is needed. Arm and Hammer Clean Burst is a mid-range formula without the full three-enzyme package of Tide or Persil. For households with grease-heavy work clothes, athletic gear or children's clothing with set-in stains, spending more for Tide or Persil provides meaningfully better results.

Arm and Hammer Clean Burst uses baking soda as a cleaning booster alongside standard surfactants. The baking soda provides mild deodorizing that complements the fragrance rather than masking odors with high fragrance concentration.

The detergent is HE compatible and available in a wide variety of scents and fragrance-free options. At 77 loads per container, it provides more loads than most competitors at the same price point.

At $12 for 77 loads, Arm and Hammer Clean Burst costs 16 cents per load, the lowest cost per load of any detergent in this guide.

Questions people ask

HE vs regular laundry detergent: what is the difference?

HE (high-efficiency) laundry detergents are formulated to produce less suds than standard detergents. HE washing machines (front-loaders and some top-loaders) use less water than conventional top-loaders. In a low-water environment, standard detergents produce too much foam, which reduces cleaning efficiency and can leave residue on clothes and inside the machine. HE detergents clean effectively in low-water conditions and rinse completely in fewer rinse cycles. Using standard detergent in an HE machine occasionally is unlikely to cause immediate damage, but repeated use causes excess soap residue buildup inside the machine. Most modern detergents labeled HE are also safe for standard machines. Check for the HE symbol on the detergent bottle.

How much laundry detergent should I use per load?

The correct detergent dose depends on water hardness, load size and soil level, not just the detergent label's recommended dose. Detergent manufacturers typically recommend more detergent than necessary to increase consumption rate. For a standard load in soft to medium water with light to moderate soil, use half the label recommendation for most name-brand detergents. In hard water (above 200 ppm), the full label dose may be necessary because minerals in hard water reduce surfactant effectiveness. Overdosing with detergent leaves residue on clothes that makes them stiff, traps soil in the fabric and creates machine buildup. Under-dosing in hard water or with heavily soiled loads leaves stains uncleaned. When in doubt, start with half the recommended dose and increase if clothes are not clean.

Liquid vs pod vs powder laundry detergent: which is best?

Liquid detergents are the most flexible format: they can be used as a pre-treatment on stains by applying directly, they dissolve in cold water and the dose is adjustable for different load sizes. Pods (unit dose pacs) are pre-measured, which prevents overdosing and underdosing but does not allow dose adjustment for small loads or heavy stains. Pods can leave undissolved material if the machine or water temperature is very cold. Powder detergents have the longest shelf life, lowest cost per load and best performance in hard water (where builders compensate for mineral interference). Powder can clump and does not pre-treat stains. For most households, liquid is the best default. Pods are best for travel and simplicity.
