What is the difference between cross-cut and micro-cut shredding?

A cross-cut shredder cuts paper both lengthwise and crosswise, producing small rectangular pieces approximately 3/16-inch wide by 1.5 inches long. This provides adequate security for personal documents like bank statements and medical records at the level of a P-3 or P-4 security standard. A micro-cut shredder produces much smaller particles approximately 1/32-inch by 5/16-inch, providing P-5 or higher security that would require manually assembling thousands of tiny pieces to reconstruct the document. Micro-cut is appropriate for highly sensitive documents such as legal documents, classified information and identity documents. For most household and small office document destruction, cross-cut provides more than adequate security.

What documents should I shred at home?

Documents worth shredding before discarding include: bank and credit card statements, tax returns and supporting documents older than seven years, pre-approved credit card offers, medical bills, insurance policies after the policy expires, pay stubs after reconciling them with the annual W-2, and anything with a Social Security number, account number or medical information.
