Deep-sky nebulae and galaxies are the primary targets. The 4SE's 4-inch aperture limits light-gathering for faint deep-sky objects. For regular deep-sky observation, the 6SE or 8SE provide meaningfully more aperture.
The Celestron NexStar 4SE uses a Maksutov-Cassegrain design with a 4-inch (102mm) aperture and 1,325mm focal length. The long focal length produces high magnification views of the Moon, planets and double stars with the included eyepieces.
SkyAlign alignment requires pointing at any three bright objects in the sky. The telescope identifies them automatically and aligns to the sky from there. No star chart knowledge is required; the mount finds objects on command through the StarPointer controller.
The single-fork alt-azimuth GoTo mount tracks objects as they move across the sky, keeping objects centered in the eyepiece during observation sessions. Without GoTo tracking, an object drifts out of view at high magnification within seconds.
What buyers say
Beginners who want a fully automated star-finding telescope at the entry price of the NexStar line say Celestron NexStar 4SE Maksutov-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope does what it describes without needing adjustments out of the box. Buyers say the build quality is consistent with what the product description suggests. Buyers who find themselves in a position where deep-sky nebulae and galaxies are the primary targets say a different option makes more sense for their situation.
